Appreciation versus Recognition

Working in a multinational company, especially one based in USA there are some (work)cultural differences that need a clear understanding. The difference between Appreciation and Recognition is one of them.
We all complete tasks as part of our routine activities. The American culture basically promotes a positive acknowledgment of completed tasks in the form of Appreciation. It also strongly encourages Recognition of some key achievements. Problem is the thin line between the two. The attempt here is clarify the difference between the two.

Positive acknowledgment in most cases is Appreciation, generally to motivate the individual to strive for more. On the other hand if an accomplishment is above & beyond normal it is worthy of recognition.
Recognition is louder and public compared to Appreciations. Recognition is generally coupled with Rewards too.

In the Indian culture we are generally very stingy in appreciation hence when it happens it seems like recognition and Rewards are expected. This is generally a challenging area for most especially managing expectations around it.

Trail and Path ...

The difference between a trail and a path - Trail is a path that someone has already traveled, a path is a trail that someone would like to follow.

Trails of great leaders are paths for followers ...
